Comparison of bio-impedance spectroscopy and multi-frequency bio-impedance analysis for the assessment of extracellular and total body water in surgical patients.
Measurements of extracellular and total body water provide useful information on the nutritional status of surgical patients and may be estimated from whole-body bio-impedance measurements at different frequencies. Resistance and reactance were measured at 50 frequencies from 5kHz to 1MHz in 29 surgical patients (17 males, 12 females) with a wide range of extracellular to total body water ratios.
State of nutrition, body composition and the dietary habits of obese women aged 60-85, students at the association of the third age university in Szczecin
This work aims at evaluation of nutritional status and diet of women whose BMI ≥ 25 (kg/m2) aged 60–69 and 70–85, students at The Third Age University in Szczecin. Nutritional status, body content, socioeconomic status, quantitative daily food rations (crp) and their resultant Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) were evaluated.
Assessment of influence of pro-health nutrition education and resulting changes of nutrition behavior of women aged 65-85 on their body content
One of systemic changes connected to body ageing is the change of body content and the possibility of formation and/or intensification of insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension symptoms.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis in a Mathematical Model for Estimating Fat-free Mass in Multiple Segments in Elderly Taiwanese Males
This research applied bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and Dual-Energy X-ray AbsorptioMetry (DXA) to measure the body composition of Taiwan elderly. We developed the new mathematical estimation model for fat free mass of multiple segments.
Validity of Bioimpedance Equations to Evaluate Fat-Free Mass and Muscle Mass in Severely Malnourished Anorectic Patients
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a simple and rapid technique to measure body composition (BC). Validity of BIA in patients with low body mass index (BMI) remains controversial. We assessed the validity of several BIA equations to evaluate fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM) and muscle mass in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) by using dual X ray absorptiometry (DXA) as reference.
Serum Visfatin Levels in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia
Visfatin is an adipose tissue-derived hormone shown to correlate with visceral fat mass in patients with obesity. Its possible role in patients with different types of eating disorders is unknown. We measured fasting serum levels of visfatin and leptin and surrogate measures of insulin sensitivity in 10 untreated patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 10 untreated patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 20 age-matched healthy women (C) to study the possible role of visfatin in these disorders.
Body composition at the bedside
To evaluate the use of an inexpensive hand-held bioelectric impedance analysis machine which measures lean body mass, by technical comparisons against standard instruments and techniques (an in-house bioelectric impedance machine and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and by performing body composition analyses in groups of potentially malnourished patients.
Body Composition: A Motivational Tool in Anorexia Nervosa
Weight is commonly used as a means of monitoring progress in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa, but it is a crude measure of health. Patients have a fear of weight gain, particularly becoming "fat",. A more detailed measure was needed to provide accurate information to patients as to what their weight gain entailed.
Body composition changes and its association with dyslipidemia in patients receiving hemodialysis
The study aimed to assess the body composition changes after dialysis in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis and to determine the strengths of relationships between various body composition parameters and blood lipid levels in these patients.
The Extracellular Water Corrected for Height Predicts Technique Survival in Peritoneal Dialysis Patient
Most patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) consume a normal Western diet that contains a large amount of salt. This causes increase in extracellular volume ("fluid overload") that has to be removed mostly with the dialysis fluid, as residual renal function (if present) cannot cope with it. In the present study, we prospectively investigated whether an increased extracellular volume (corrected for height) predicted technique survival in PD patients.
