Critical view on diagnosing muscle wasting by single-frequency bio-electrical impedance in COPD
Assessment of muscle wasting in COPD is relevant as it is independently associated with metabolic and functional consequences and even survival. Muscle wasting can be approached by assessing fat free mass (FFM), but it is already demonstrated that FFM measured by bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) underestimates FFM measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (FFMDExA) in a relatively small COPD group.
TNF-α is associated with loss of lean body mass only in already cachectic COPD patients
Systemic inflammation may contribute to cachexia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this longitudinal study we assessed the association between circulating C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6 levels and subsequent loss of fat free mass and fat mass in more than 400 COPD patients over three years.
Assessment of Nutritional status in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered a major public health problem in the world. Weight loss, muscle and fat mass depletion are common nutritional problems in COPD patients and are determinant factors in pulmonary function, health status, disability and mortality. In the present study, we assessed nutritional status in COPD patients.
Bedside methods versus dual energy X-ray absorptiometry for body composition measurement in COPD
The measurement of body composition is of value in the nutritional assessment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The purpose of the present study was to compare two bedside methods for the measurement of body composition using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a reference method.
Bioelectrical impedance phase angle relates to function, disease severity and prognosis in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) provides a simple method to assess changes in body composition. Raw BIA variables such as phase angle provide direct information on cellular mass and integrity, without the assumptions inherent in estimating body compartments, e.g. fat-free mass (FFM). Phase angle is a strong functional and prognostic marker in many disease states, but data in COPD are lacking. Our aims were to describe the measurement of phase angle in patients with stable COPD and determine the construct and discriminate validity of phase angle by assessing its relationship with established markers of function, disease severity and prognosis.
Quadriceps wasting and physical inactivity in patients with COPD
Quadriceps weakness is an important complication of advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but few data exist concerning muscle bulk in early disease. We hypothesised that quadriceps bulk, measured by ultrasound rectus femoris cross-sectional area (USRFCSA), would be reduced in mild, as well as advanced, COPD compared with controls, and would correlate with physical activity.
Anti-fibrinolytic Agents & Lung Water in Cardiac Surgical Patients Interim results of a prospective randomised double blind placebo controlled trial
We report the interim results of a prospective randomised double-blind placebo controlled trial of aprotinin v. tranexamic acid v. placebo using a novel device that can measure impedance noninvasively to attempt to give trends in extra-cellular lung water over time.
