Pilot study of the effect of a collagen hydrolysate supplement, Slendernight, on inch and weight loss
12 volunteers completed an 8 week trial of the collagen hydrolysate supplement Slendernight. 10 women and 2 men aged between 18 and 72. One was lost to follow up due to travelling overseas. All volunteers wished to slim, but ranged from near average to clearly obese at baseline.
Low-fat, High-carbohydrate (low-glycaemic index) diet induces weight loss and preserves lean body mass in obese healthy subjects: results of a 24-week study
The traditional treatment for obesity which is based on a reduced caloric diet has only been partially successful. Contributing factors are not only a poor long-term dietary adherence but also a significant loss of lean body mass and subsequent reduction in energy expenditure. Both low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets and diets using low-glycaemic index (GI) foods are capable of inducing modest weight loss without specific caloric restriction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and medium-term effect of a low-fat diet with high (low GI) carbohydrates on weight loss, body composition changes and dietary compliance.
Fat-free mass prediction equation for Moroccan women in the 1st trimester of pregnancy using bioelectrical impedance analysis and deuterium oxide dilution
Determination of body composition by deuterium oxide dilution, development and validation of bioelectrical impedance prediction equation for Moroccan women in the 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis in normal and hypertensive pregnancy
The aim of the present study was to assess longitudinal changes in body water compartments in pregnant women and to correlate these measurements with the course of pregnancy.
Comparison of nutritional risk screening tools for predicting sarcopenia in hospitalized patients
The aim of this study was to assess the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized patients with three different tests and to compare these tests in terms of long hospitalization periods and sarcopenia.
Chronic disease outcomes after severe acute malnutrition in Malawian children (ChroSAM): a cohort study
Tackling severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a global health priority. Heightened risk of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in children exposed to SAM at around 2 years of age is plausible in view of previously described consequences of other early nutritional insults. By applying developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) theory to this group, we aimed to explore the long-term effects of SAM.
Bioimpedance analysis in the assessment of lymphoedema diagnosis and management
Lymphoedema can pose diagnostic challenged, particularly in its early stages. Conventional assessment measures suffer from varying degrees of invasiveness and imprecision. In this context, the potential current and future applicability of multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (MFBIA) is discussed.
Interchangeability of Two Electrode Placement Protocols Used by Bioimepdance Spectroscopy Devices in the Detection of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphoedema
Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) devices are routinely used in the assessment of breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL). The equipotential electrode placement is a commonly used protocol for the assessment of BCRL. However, the sternal notch electrode placement protocol is also in use. Whether these two protocols are interchangeable is not known.
Lymphoedema: what can be measured and how
The evolution of lymphoedema during physical treatment appears quite easy to measure, especially if we limit ourselves to considering the decrease in its volume, and furthermore if we limit the volume’s measurement to the geometry of the arms, forearms, legs and thighs to a cylinder (lymphoedema reside mostly in these anatomical segments). On the other hand if we want to observe more complex anatomical areas such as the breast or scrotum, and especially when we take into account other parameters that are equally as interesting, such as the quality of the skin, it’s water density, the thickness of the dermis etc., the task of remaining precise becomes much more complex.
Bioelectrical impedance for monitoring the efficacy of lymphoedema treatment programmes
The treatment of lymphoedema includes a combination of massage, compression bandaging, and exercise. To date the most common technique of assessing the efficacy of treatment has involved estimating the total limb volume from circumferential measurements at fixed intervals along the limb. This study investigated the application of multiple frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis, MFBIA, to monitor the volume of lymphoedema in the upper limb of patients who developed this disorder following surgery for cancer of the breast.
