Assessing fluid shifts non-invasively in children - validation and reproducibility of a bioelectrical impedance assay
The measurement of bioelectrical impedance is simple and non-invasive and offers a potential solution to the difficulties in measuring fluid shifts in critically ill patients. It may also be useful in predicting mortality in sick adults. Its use in children has been
limited. We have measured its reproducibility in children in the short and medium term.
Assessment of total body water using bioelectrical impedance analysis in neonates receiving intensive care
To determine the most suitable anthropometric and impedance measures and current frequency for the application of bioelectrical impedance to neonates receiving intensive care; and to derive predictive models for the estimation of total body water.
Randomized, multi-center trial of two hypo-energetic diets in obese subjects: high- versus low-fat content
To investigate whether a hypo-energetic low-fat diet is superior to a hypo-energetic high-fat diet for the treatment of obesity.
A new BIA Equation Estimating the Body Composition of Young Children
Bioelectric impedance analyses (BIA) provides a valid and reliable measure of body composition in field, clinical, and research settings if standard protocol procedures are followed, and population-specific equations are available and utilized. The objective of this study was to create and cross-validate a new BIA body composition equation with representative healthy weight (HW), overweight (OW), and obese (OB) young children.
Bariatric Surgery Outcomes in Sarcopenic Obesity
Sarcopenic obesity is the combination of low muscle mass and strength with increased fat mass. This condition is associated with negative health outcomes. We hypothesized that sarcopenia could be a pejorative factor on surgical weight loss.
An isoenergetic high-protein, moderate-fat diet does not compromise strength and fatigue during resistance exercise in women
Resistance exercise is recommended to individuals following high-protein diets in order to augment changes in body composition. However, alterations in macronutrient composition may compromise physical performance. The present study investigated the effects of an isoenergetic high-protein diet on upper and lower limb strength and fatigue during high-intensity resistance exercise.
Differences in health related quality of life in a sample of Spanish menopausal women with and without obesity
To investigate whether body mass index, abdominal obesity or fat distribution in postmenopausal women influence their quality of Life.
Physical Fitness in Morbidly Obese Patients: Effect of Gastric Bypass Surgery and Exercise Training
There is a growing consensus that bariatric surgery is currently the most efficacious and long-term treatment for clinically severe obesity. However, it remains to be determined whether poor physical fitness, an important characteristic of these patients, improves as well. The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the effect of gastric bypass surgery on physical fitness and to determine if an exercise program in the first 4 months is beneficial.
New body fat prediction equations for severely obese patients
Severe obesity imposes physical limitations to body composition assessment. Our aim was to compare body fat (BF) estimations of severely obese patients obtained by bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP) for development of new equations for BF prediction.
Body Fat Composition: A Predictive Factor for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
To investigate body fat composition, measured by bioelectrical impedance assay (BIA), for predicting the presence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Body fat composition was also compared with other well known OSAHS predictors such as body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, and abdominal visceral fat.
