Comparison of two bioimpedance approaches to assess lean tissue during and after chemoradiotherapy in advanced head and neck cancer outpatients
Loss of muscle mass is a key characteristic of malnutrition. Bioimpedance is an available technology capable of generating measures of lean tissue at the bed-side. We compared the utility of two different bioimpedance approaches, multiple-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Variables of interest were 50 kHz phase angle (PA), 200 kHz/5 kHz impedance ratio (IR), fat-free mass (FFM), total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW), and the ratio of ECW/TBW.
Bioimpedance vector analysis for body composition in Mexican population
To construct bivariate tolerance ellipses from impedance values normalized for height, which can be used in Mexican population for the assessment of body composition and compare them with others made in different populations.
Using bioimpedance analysis to assess intensive care unit patients with sepsis in the post-resuscitation period: a prospective multicentre observational study
Clinicians lack well-validated, non-invasive, objective tools to guide volume management in the post-resuscitative period. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) represents a novel method for guiding fluid management. We studied the relationship of BIA vector length (VL), an indicator of volume status, to the need for mechanical ventilation in patients with sepsis.
Bio-electrical impedance vector analysis: testing Piccoli's model against objective body composition data in children and adolescents
Bio-electrical impedance (BI) analysis is a simple body composition method ideal for children. However, its utility in sick or malnourished children is complicated by variability in hydration. BI vector analysis (BIVA)
potentially resolves this, using a theoretical model that differentiates hydration from cell mass. We tested this model against reference methods in healthy children varying widely in age and nutritional status.
Utility of bio-electrical impedance vector analysis for monitoring treatment of severe acute malnutrition in children
Change in hydration is common in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) including during treatment, but is difficult to assess. We investigated the utility of bio-electrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), a quick non-invasive method, for indexing hydration during treatment.Utility of bio-electrical impedance vector analysis for monitoring treatment of severe acute malnutrition in children
Cachexia assessed by bioimpedance vector analysis as a prognostic indicator in chronic stable heart failure patients
This study explored whether the cachectic state assessed by bioimpedance vector analysis provides additional prognostic information about mortality from all causes.
Mortality in adult patients with fluid overload evaluated by BIVA upon admission to the emergency department
The aim of this study was to investigate the association of fluid overload, measured by bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and also by accumulated fluid balance, with 30-day mortality rates in patients admitted to the emergency department (ED).
Fluid overload at start of continuous renal replacement therapy is associated with poorer clinical condition and outcome: a prospective observational study on the combined use of bioimpedance vector analysis and serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic pep
It is unclear whether the fluid status, as determined by bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) combined with serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptides (NT-pro-BNP) measurement, is associated with treatment outcome among patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Our objective was to answer this question.
Reliability and Detecting Change Following Short-Term Creatine Supplementation: Comparison of Two-Component Body Composition Methods
The purpose of the present study was twofold: firstly, to assess the reliability of various body composition methods, and secondly, to determine the ability of the methods to estimate changes in fat-free mass (FFM) following creatine (Cr) supplementation.
Phase angle as a marker for sarcopenia in cirrhosis
In patients with cirrhosis nutritional disturbances can progress to sarcopenia, worsening the disease prognosis. Phase angle (PA) may be a useful marker for sarcopenia in this clinical population reflecting the cellular integrity level. This cross-sectional and prospective study evaluated the association between low PA values and clinical/nutritional variables in cirrhosis with emphasis on sarcopenia.
