Pilot study of the effect of a collagen hydrolysate supplement, Slendernight, on inch and weight loss
12 volunteers completed an 8 week trial of the collagen hydrolysate supplement Slendernight. 10 women and 2 men aged between 18 and 72. One was lost to follow up due to travelling overseas. All volunteers wished to slim, but ranged from near average to clearly obese at baseline.
The relationship between BMI and percent body fat, measured by bioelectrical impedance, in a large adult sample is curvilinear and influenced by age and sex
The study aimed to establish the effects of age, gender and age-gender interactions on BMI-% fat relationships over a wide range of BMI and age. It also aimed to examine controversies regarding linear or curvilinear BMI-% fat relationships.
Body Water Compartment Measurements Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Tritium and Sodium Bromide Dilution: A Validation Study
This study was undertaken to assess the comparability of body water compartment estimates in healthy volunteers using single and dual frequency BIA with established reference methods of tritium and NaBr dilution.
State of nutrition, body composition and the dietary habits of obese women aged 60-85, students at the association of the third age university in Szczecin
This work aims at evaluation of nutritional status and diet of women whose BMI ≥ 25 (kg/m2) aged 60–69 and 70–85, students at The Third Age University in Szczecin. Nutritional status, body content, socioeconomic status, quantitative daily food rations (crp) and their resultant Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) were evaluated.
Assessment of influence of pro-health nutrition education and resulting changes of nutrition behavior of women aged 65-85 on their body content
One of systemic changes connected to body ageing is the change of body content and the possibility of formation and/or intensification of insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension symptoms.
Serum Visfatin Levels in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia
Visfatin is an adipose tissue-derived hormone shown to correlate with visceral fat mass in patients with obesity. Its possible role in patients with different types of eating disorders is unknown. We measured fasting serum levels of visfatin and leptin and surrogate measures of insulin sensitivity in 10 untreated patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 10 untreated patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 20 age-matched healthy women (C) to study the possible role of visfatin in these disorders.
Body composition at the bedside
To evaluate the use of an inexpensive hand-held bioelectric impedance analysis machine which measures lean body mass, by technical comparisons against standard instruments and techniques (an in-house bioelectric impedance machine and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and by performing body composition analyses in groups of potentially malnourished patients.
Loss of 50% of excess weight using a very low energy diet improves insulin-stimulated glucose disposal and skeletal muscle insulin signalling in obese insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients
Both energy restriction (ER) per se and weight loss improve glucose metabolism in obese insulintreated type 2 diabetic patients. Short-term ER decreases basal endogenous glucose production (EGP) but not glucose disposal. In contrast the blood glucose-lowering mechanism of long-term ER with substantial weight loss has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of loss of 50% of excess weight [50% excess weight reduction (EWR)] on EGP, whole-body insulin sensitivity and the disturbed myocellular insulin-signalling pathway in ten obese insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients.
Insulin-requiring diabetes in Ethiopia: associations with poverty, early undernutrition and and anthropometric disproportion
Most insulin-requiring diabetes patients in Ethiopia have an atypical form of the disease, which resembles previous descriptions of malnutrition-related diabetes. As so little is known about its aetiology, we have carried out a case–control study to evaluate its social and nutritional determinants.
Critical view on diagnosing muscle wasting by single-frequency bio-electrical impedance in COPD
Assessment of muscle wasting in COPD is relevant as it is independently associated with metabolic and functional consequences and even survival. Muscle wasting can be approached by assessing fat free mass (FFM), but it is already demonstrated that FFM measured by bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) underestimates FFM measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (FFMDExA) in a relatively small COPD group.
